What Is Heavy-Coat Aluminized Silicon Steel?

Standard aluminized silicon steel sheet is produced to coating weights of AS80 or AS120 g/m² (grams of aluminum-silicon alloy per square meter, both sides combined). These are the grades most commonly used in automotive exhaust systems and household appliance components. Heavy-coat grades — AS240, AS270, and AS300 — apply two to three times the standard coating volume, dramatically increasing the thickness of the protective aluminum-silicon barrier layer.

The coating composition remains the same: approximately 88–91% aluminum and 5–11% silicon, hot-dip applied to a carbon steel substrate. What changes is the total coating mass, which translates directly to longer service life, greater resistance to corrosive media, and improved performance in the wet-dry cycling environments typical of outdoor pipeline insulation.

Insulation metal jacketing — the outer protective layer wrapped around insulated pipelines — must simultaneously handle UV exposure, moisture ingress, chemical vapors, thermal cycling, and mechanical impact. In oil fields, refineries, and coastal industrial environments, the corrosive burden is severe. Traditional aluminum jacketing offers lightweight handling but lacks mechanical strength; stainless steel is strong but expensive and heavy. Aluminized silicon steel at AS240–AS300 closes this gap:
