What Is Alloy C-276?
Alloy C-276 (Hastelloy C-276, UNS N10276) is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with the addition of tungsten, developed for the most severe corrosion environments. Its high molybdenum content delivers exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while its controlled low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation during welding so that welded structures retain their corrosion resistance.
The combination of nickel, molybdenum, chromium and tungsten gives Alloy C-276 outstanding resistance to oxidizing and reducing media, chlorides, and mixed acid service. Because of this, it is a first choice for pollution control, chemical processing, pulp and paper, and waste treatment equipment where conventional stainless steels fail.
Key Features
Severe Corrosion Resistance
Resists pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in chloride-bearing and strongly oxidizing media.
Wide Media Compatibility
Effective in oxidizing and reducing acids, mixed acids, and chloride environments where 316L and 904L fall short.
Weldable Low-Carbon Grade
Low carbon (0.01 percent max) limits carbide precipitation, preserving corrosion resistance in the heat affected zone.
Full Product Range
Pipe, tube, sheet, plate, bar, wire and forgings from a single supplier with matching mill test certificates.
Standards Compliant
Produced to ASTM and ASME specifications and NACE MR-0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service applications.
Export-Ready Supply
Stable stock and worldwide shipping with full documentation, competitive tonnage and cut-to-size options.

Corrosion & High-Temperature Performance
Pitting & Crevice Corrosion
High molybdenum content provides strong resistance to pitting and crevice attack in chloride environments.
Oxidizing & Reducing Media
Chromium supports oxidizing resistance while molybdenum and tungsten handle reducing conditions.
Weld Zone Integrity
Low carbon limits grain boundary carbide precipitation, keeping welded joints corrosion resistant.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Alloy C-276 used for?
Alloy C-276 is used in the most severe corrosion environments: pollution control and flue gas desulfurization, chemical processing, pulp and paper bleaching, and waste treatment equipment. It is selected where chlorides, mixed acids and both oxidizing and reducing media attack ordinary stainless steels.
What is the difference between Alloy C-276 and Alloy C-22?
Alloy C-276 contains tungsten and higher molybdenum to resist reducing media and chloride pitting, and is extremely weldable due to its low carbon content. Alloy C-22 uses a different chromium and molybdenum balance for stronger oxidizing resistance. MESCO can advise on the correct grade for your specific medium and temperature.
Which forms and sizes can MESCO supply?
MESCO supplies Alloy C-276 as seamless and welded pipe, tube, plate, sheet, round bar, wire and forgings, produced to ASTM and ASME specifications. Send your required size list and quantities and we will confirm availability.
Is Alloy C-276 suitable for sour service?
Yes. Alloy C-276 is compliant with NACE MR-0175 / ISO 15156 for use in oil and gas service containing hydrogen sulfide. Mill test certificates and full traceability are provided with each shipment.
Can MESCO provide mill test certificates and third-party inspection?
Yes. Every shipment includes an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate. Third-party inspection such as SGS, BV or TUV can be arranged on request before shipment.
